The Los Angeles Chargers have officially parted ways with star pass rusher Joey Bosa after nine seasons. The decision, announced Wednesday night, was largely driven by salary cap constraints and Bosa’s recent injury struggles. His release frees up $25.36 million in cap space, easing the team’s financial burden ahead of the 2025 season.

Bosa, the third overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, was a key part of the Chargers’ defense. His 72 career sacks rank second in franchise history and tie for the 10th most in the NFL since his debut. Despite restructuring his contract last season, Bosa only managed five sacks in 14 games as he battled hip and back injuries. He missed significant time over the past two seasons, playing just 14 games combined in 2022 and 2023.

With Bosa’s departure, the Chargers are expected to focus on retaining veteran linebacker Khalil Mack, while young standout Tuli Tuipulotu is likely to step into a starting role.
